Each year the Scottish Rite Masons in Virginia provide significant financial support to the speech and language programs at James Madison University. The source of this funding comes in two forms. The funding for the JMU- David Kruger Scottish Rite Summer Speech-Language Program and three stipends annually for master's students in speech-language pathology comes from the generous gifts of the 12,000 Scottish Rite Masons in Virginia. The second funding source comes from the estate of the late Wallace and Dot Sampson, which funds a Ph.D. student annually. This Graduate Assistantship is named in honor of the Sampson’s. The Virginia Masons are part of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry (www.srmason-sj.org), which throughout its Southern Jurisdiction, supports 165 similar programs for childhood language disorders. Scottish Rite Masons are dedicated to helping children communicate.

FRED A. BAKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship fund, which now helps to support graduate students in speech-language pathology, was established in 1974 by the Northwest Arlington Lions Club. The fund was named in honor of Fred A. Baker in 1979 by the Northwest Arlington Lions Charities, Inc. – the fund raising and tax-exempt charitable arm of the club. Fred Baker was a member of the club from 1956 until his untimely death in 1974. He served as President of our club in the 1967 to 1968 Lion Year. Subsequently, he served as chairman of our sight conservation committee for three years, and was the Lions Club International District 24-A (Northern Virginia) Eye Bank Chairman for the 1972 to 1973 Lion Year. He was a strong supporter of the Old Dominion Eye Bank and projects seeking prevention and effective treatment of glaucoma.
